Women United Scholarship Fund
Established in 2020, the Women United Scholarship Fund supports local, non-traditional female students pursuing a higher education degree at University of South Carolina Beaufort or Technical College of the Lowcountry. Through the support of women in the community, Women United has presented scholarships to more than 20 local women.
Breaking Barriers to Education
The Breaking Barriers to Education Fund seeks to help fulfill needs that would otherwise prevent a student from attending school or from reaching their full potential. The fund is administered by the United Way of the Lowcountry HELPLINE, which works with school officials to directly remove financial barriers that stand in the way of a child’s education.
Operation Backpack
Operation Backpack is an initiative of Women United that provides local students in need with backpacks filled with school supplies. The group collaborates closely with school social workers to identify students who may not be receiving assistance from other organizations. Last year, Operation Backpack provided more than 1,000 students with school supplies and backpacks. These students were able to start the school year off with the confidence they needed to succeed.
Mimi's Closets
Mimi’s Closets offer essential school and personal supplies to students in need during the school year. The initiative’s goal is to create special teacher supply closets stocked with donated school and personal items at schools throughout the Lowcountry. In addition to school supplies, Mimi’s Closets contains basic needs items such as pullups for preschoolers; toothpaste and toothbrushes; sanitary wipes, soap and sanitary hygiene products; first aid supplies; and more.
How to Help:
- Make a secure online donation to help purchase uniforms, backpacks, and supplies.
- Ship supplies directly through our Amazon Wish List found at https://uwlowcountry.org/WUAmazon (please send to the attention of Bethany Marcinkowski).
- Join the School Supply Drive at Tanger Outlets Hilton Head’s Back to School Bash from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 2 near Columbia at Tanger 2 in Bluffton. Hosted during Tax-Free Weekend, the event will feature music, crafts, food trucks, giveaways and more. Tanger Outlets Hilton Head, a proud sponsor of United Way of the Lowcountry, will be collecting donations to support Operation Backpack and Mimi’s Closets.
