Startling statistics show the majority of our children begin their education unprepared, starting a cycle of “catch up” that leaves them unable as adults to take advantage of education and workforce opportunities. Early childhood education offers the cognitive foundation required to prepare youth and adults to succeed and achieve economic mobility.
The Lowcountry Early Childhood Coalition and key stakeholders in Beaufort and Jasper counties have agreed that an initiative called "The Basics," developed at Harvard University, would provide the messaging, activities and community education components necessary to positively impact the Lowcountry community. To date, The Basics has been implemented in nearly 100 communities and continues to expand.
The Basics strategy is a population-level initiative to enhance the development of children ages birth to five by providing information, social supports, and regular reminders to parents and caregivers to apply The Basics Principles and related practices for early childhood caregiving.
The need to address early childhood development is also not a new idea. The act of bringing the entire community together to address and improve the results of our early childhood development crisis IS a new concept for our community.
The United Way of the Lowcountry serves as the fiscal agent for the Lowcountry Early Childhood Coalition and all donations gifted to The Basics.
